Weeks #514-517: "haunt" and/or "scare" is open!

That's the ticket!

In communing with nature and the season, with the cooler weather and everywhere you look ghosts and goblins are starting to pop up, we thought it would be an amazing time to bring forth appropriate prompts for the next few weeks. So knowing that, welcome to "haunt" and/or "scare" for the next four weeks!

The great thing is, not only do these prompts fit with the season, but they also can slide in to any other challenge you might be doing this spooky Halloween season. Maybe Jeannie Miller has some sort of haunting premonition about her brother Rodney who's stuck all the way in another galaxy? Maybe there's another mission to walk into a bug cave and the thought of it scares John because he knows how those things think now.

But you could totally take it another direction. Maybe Elizabeth finds herself back on Earth, in a life so perfect that she's almost scared to ask what's going on (could it be alien influence? Who knows - you tell the story!). Or maybe it's as simple as Evan Lorne showing Ronon around his old haunts in San Francisco.

Whatever the case may be - and whatever you decide to do to the characters - you've got until the first weekend in November to get it written down and posted.

Why This Must Be Read: A fun, short crossover. The town of Eureka, for those unfamiliar, is a town of scientific geniuses ostestably gathered together to invent things the military can use. Jack Carter is the sheriff, a normal man in an abnormal place. And OF COURSE Paul Davis would be the Pentagon liason. It's just the sort of job he would have with his stargate program experience.

Why This Must Be Read: "Lovely" is one of my favorite pieces of eldritch horror period and single-handedly got me to watch The Sentinel. It's rich and interesting and strange. An absolutely fantastic tale of strangers being forced (and/or choosing) to work together, friendship/love, road trips, the geometry of existence, and... income tax evasion. A quick note that this fic is gen, but the sequel is slash.

Why This Must Be Read: Grin. This is a fun crossover. Buffy has had some prophetic ideas of where she's needed, leading into the melding of her fantasy genre with SG-1's scifi without betraying either. If you enjoyed Buffy in her pink halter top in the Initiative, this is the fic for you. She is also so similar in some ways to Jack and just as physically strong as Teal'c. This series delights me.

Why This Must Be Read: This fic by Tazmy—highly revised and expanded from the 2007 original—holds a special place in my heart and gets under my skin even more with every reread.
Switching between Rodney’s and Teyla’s perspectives, it portrays their friendship in an incredibly emotional and sensitive way. After being imprisoned together, Teyla and Rodney desperately try to protect one another, especially after Rodney discovers Teyla’s pregnancy.
Rodney respects Teyla in so many ways—her strength, grace, integrity, kindness, and patience. And Teyla values Rodney just as profoundly, seeing past his dismissive behavior to the person behind it—intelligent, insecure, vulnerable, reliable, and brave.
The story delivers hurt, angst, and insecurities (heed the tags!), but also offers a lighthearted, joyful, and caring ending. I can’t recommend it enough!

Exploring hurt and angst, Rodney’s strong feelings for John, and his deep bond with Ronon, it envelops you in the affection, compassion, and love shared between all of them. Everything is handled with such care, sensitivity, and insight—it’s definitely in for many reads and rereads.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of my feel-good comfort reads. John's a charismatic TV presenter and Rodney's an irascible, perfectionist building contractor who HGTV build a home renovation fix-it show around. It's like Holmes on Homes but with Rodney badmouthing the shoddy work and half-assed prior contractors and driving his highly competent crew to do amazing makeovers. Teyla is the 2IC with people skills who smooths over his bulldozer approach, and Elizabeth's the executive producer who manages them all. Inevitably, John and Rodney become close and their relationship is beautifully drawn and absolutely in character. Teyla gets pregnant and has Torren during a season finale, leading to spectacular ratings, and finally the media find out that John and Rodney are together and they have to deal with that. It's all really well written, warm and engaging, and I want to watch this show SO BAD! Seriously, I'd watch the hell out of it, but reading the fic comes a close second. The story's fairly well known, but hey, maybe it's time for a re-read!

Rodney is a brewer and winemaker from a local vineyard family who'd left Bar Harbor in Maine for a few years after an argument with his family, but who's now returned to renovate the local pub. The usual suspects are translated into local characters - Ronon a chef, and Teyla an environmentalist, for example. There's romance, adventure at sea, and of course a happy ending - it's a lot of fun!
