Has everyone heard of the latest kurfluffle, SurveyFail? I just spent a while catching up on it through various links to blogs, posts on lj & dw....what utter asses those so-called researchers are. My favorite is this post:

http://www.roughtheory.org/content/wearing-the-juice-a-case-study-in-research-implosion/#comment-182110

I ADORE this:

Kruger and Dunning are interested in whether, below a certain level basic competence, it becomes very difficult for people to improve their skills - because they are, in fact, too incompetent to be able to tell the difference between competence and incompetence in the first place.

OMG---words can't express the love I have for that. Love, utter, utter, love. *love*

here's some more linkage:

http://thingswithwings.dreamwidth.org/74276.html

http://mackle.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/the-curious-case-of-the-game-show-neuroscientists-or-how-not-to-research-an-online-community/

http://linkspam.dreamwidth.org/

Plenty of individual people have wonderful posts on their journals/blogs, you'll have to find them by following links :-)

comments

Subject: Tell Obama: We're Counting on You

Hi,

President Obama will give a major speech next week laying out what he thinks needs to be in the health care bill.

This is a critical crossroads. The president needs to hear that Americans are counting on him to stand up to the status quo and fight for real reform with a strong public health insurance option.

I just signed a petition telling President Obama I'm counting on him to fight hard for a bold health care reform bill. Can you join me at the link below?

http://pol.moveon.org/hcobama

Thanks!

comments

I've already done my good deed for the day.... Driving back from dropping my daughter off this morning, there was a work van stopped just inside my street. Next to it was a turtle in the road. I braked like crazy and got out to see if it was injured...nope. The work guys were just looking at it, sheesh. Asked me if I were going to make turtle soup out of it, HA. Told me I'd better watch out cuz it's a snapper, (well DUH). I think I must have had them really confused: here's this fairly nicely dressed middle aged woman hops out of an upscale SUV, and like a pro, whips that 12"-15" snapper up by the tail and plops him in the back of my vehicle to haul home. LOL

We have an area in the far back of our property that's rather wild-ish, and there's a huge ditch running between the properties on our street and the ones behind us on the next one, about 10 foot or so in depth. Because of the tremendously high water table here (one reason why no one has basements) all properties have ditches along all 4 sides, mostly shallow ones, for water run off, but in some case, like the rear one of ours, it's deep. And it'll fill up when there's a lot of rain, and stay that way like a creek.

Anyway, we rescue all the turtles we run across because the idjits around here seem to like to run over them (MORONS). Some of the ones we've brought home are huge...painted, snappers, all sorts. So today we have a new addition to the managerie :-)

comments

No, the trouble with fandom is the people who like the shows and the characters you like, but in the wrong way. The people who love your favorite character but have a completely different take on his/her motivations. The ones that write schmoopy fic about a pairing that is obviously intended to be angstful, or who turn the light-hearted roguish hero into a tortured, alienated cutter. The ones who write meta that is consistent and well-expressed and completely missing the point. These are the people one ends up twitching and foaming at the mouth about."

comments

Yet Another English Lesson.

"Drug" is a noun meaning a substance used as a medicine. It can also be a verb meaning to proscribe and administer said medicines: to drug.

It is NOT, however, the past participle of "drag": I drag the dead body today, I drug the dead body yesterday.

No. Just...no. I'd like to drag the dead writers that use this somewhere remote.

Dragged, people. Look what the cat dragged in! That cat sure didn't "drug" in something.

Here endeth the /English rant of the day.

comments
